According to data presented in the Lok Sabha by the Union Ministry of Education, the number of Indian students studying abroad fell by 15% in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Decline in Indian Students Going to Canada

  • The number of Indian students in Canada dropped by 41%, from 2,33,532 in 2023 to 1,37,608 in 2024.
  • Reason: Stricter student visa rules and increased visa rejection rates, fueled by diplomatic tensions between India and Canada.

  • New Zealand: Notable surge from 1,605 in 2022 to 7,297 in 2024.

Why Are Students Choosing New Destinations?

  • Affordable Education: Countries like Russia and Germany offer lower tuition fees and strong scholarship programs.
  • Easier Visa Policies: Unlike Canada and the UK, European countries are providing more student-friendly visa options.
  • Quality Education & Career Opportunities: STEM and medical courses in Russia, France, and Germany are gaining popularity.

As visa restrictions tighten in Canada, the US, and Australia, Indian students are exploring new opportunities in Europe and beyond for their higher education.
